EDM’s Top 20 News Stories of 2020 – Year In Review

Phew! We have managed to survive one of the most trying years that will go down in history.  2021 is finally here as everyone holds high hopes and dreams that the world will become a safer place.

In March, COVID-19 changed the world overnight as face masks and hand sanitizer suddenly became just as important when leaving your house as your keys and your cell-phone.  In doing so, the pandemic also turned the entire music industry upside down as live entertainment was put on hold and artists were scrambling to find alternative ways to make money. This resulted in the music industry suffering a tremendous loss in 2020.

However, instead of isolating, the dance music industry united as artists began to perform for charity events and a number of tracks were released to help those in need.  To make the most of the situation, livestreams and drive-ins became the new norm while virtual reality experiences for those at home also became viable means of entertainment.

Now, with 2021 officially here, the industry has high expectations that the live entertainment sector will return with a vengeance.  Major music festivals have already announced dates and lineups for the coming year as the industry holds its breath in anticipation.

Over 825,000 people tuned in to LA Gives Back on Twitch to watch the phenomenal generosity of others raising over $14,000.  This excludes the proceeds from the sweepstakes which will end on January 1, 2021. The event still encourages donations to try to win its exclusive sweepstakes prizes, which include an Ariana Grande prize pack, a ZEDD x BMW custom jacket, a Pearl Jam signed poster, a curated package from Issa Rae, etc. Fans will be able to enter to win as many prizes, as many times as they want exclusively on Fandiem now.

For over four years, the Los Angeles music community has come together to raise money for local charities Downtown Women’s Center and My Friend’s Place. This year, the national SchoolHouse Connection was added in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

John Digweed reveals mixed LP ‘QUATTRO II’

John Digweed announced that he will be releasing a mixed LP, QUATTRO II, which is slated for release on February 23, 2021, via Bedrock.

QUATTRO II will be a follow-up to his wildly triumphant QUATTRO compilation.  Since the industry shut down back in March due to COVID-19, John Digweed called upon his favorite producers to begin working on the 4-disc project.  A true testament to Digweed’s unparalleled work ethic, the album is packed with new, unreleased tracks featuring some of electronic music’s finest producers.  With CD and vinyl orders already exceeding demand, fans are encouraged to pre-order their limited edition signed copies now which are exclusively featured on Bedrock’s official website

QUATTRO II is distinctly divided into four parts.  The first is “Soundscape,” which features atmospherically enchanting ambient textures and synths. “Tempo” advocates a melodically driven acid sound, while “Redux” boasts a feel-good house vibe. The last part, “Juxtaposition,” is exclusively mixed by German stalwart Robert Babicz, delivering an album full of futuristic electronica and ambient textures fans are sure to embrace.

Aligned with the album announcement, John Digweed has also revealed that he will be delivering an exclusive New Year’s Eve Charity Fundraiser in a Livestream performance to bring the party directly to his fans at home.  The event is scheduled to take place on December 31 from 21:30 – 01:00 (GMT).  Digweed teamed up with  Macmillan UK, an organization that provides physical, financial, and emotional support for cancer patients. Fans can purchase their ticket via Mixcloud or donate at the artist’s Just Giving page.

“Since I was 15 years old, I have spent every New Year’s Eve playing at some of the best club events around the world. This year it’s going to be a totally different experience for me as well as the rest of clubland. My ‘Bunker Sessions’ this year have allowed me to hold a house party and share it with my fans around the world, creating a real clubbing community online. Your support has been absolutely incredible and hugely appreciated.”
