ODESZA captivate MSG on The Last Goodbye Finale Tour

There was not one empty seat in Madison Square Garden as thousands of fans celebrated the electronic music duo, ODESZA take one final bow for The Last Goodbye Finale Tour, which took place in New York City for three sold-out nights on Thursday, June 20 – Saturday, June 22.

Opening with a performance of “This Version of You,” which became their first track off their Grammy-nominated album The Last Goodbye, ODESZA kicked-off their set with a live orchestra of stringed instruments on stage that built a crescendo of musical energy so tangible it made one’s hair stand on end and heart beat feel all the more palpable. The gripping opening made way for the duo erupting into fast-paced drums to the track, “Behind the Sun ” as fire blazed on stage in unison to each and every drum beat.

ODESZA flawlessly kept the crowd’s attention for a non-stop two hours by championing exclusive VIP live versions of their singles to placate fans both old and new.  Harnessing an adept blend of brash beats with breakdowns of tracks that featured emotive vocals, the duo welcomed multiple singers on stage to perform live versions of some of their most prized releases. This included two performances by Mansionair who added impassioned vocals to “Line of Sight” and “Heavier,”  Charlie Houston donning velvety, soft lyrics to “Wide Awake” as well as Izzy Bizu performing an upbeat, radiating rendition of “Forgive Me” to name a few.

To add to the grandiosity of the evening, a live drum line performed in unison to open to one of the duo’s most coveted tracks, “Bloom.”  ODESZA teased fans by performing snippets of the vocals while trombones performed on opposite ends of the stage to further raise the vibrational energy of the performance. At the song’s climax, fireworks sprinkled like confetti to radiate the stage, making the moment feel all the more magical sending the audience into a mesmerized uproar.

The duo brought the evening to a close with a moving rendition of “Light of Day ”which brought the symphony of the stringed instruments together along with enrapturing visuals to further enhance the track’s meaningful nuances. A finale performance of, “The Last Goodbye” fittingly became the finale song of the night as the brass, string instruments, and drums were brought together to create a cohesive finale. Complete with pink and gold lasers and sprawling confetti erupting onto the crowd, the performance left fans captivated by the emotional enormity of it all and privileged to experience The Last Goodbye Tour one final time.

In 2023, ODESZA released The Last Goodbye Cinematic Experience in over 700 theaters in 23 countries for one night only, bringing the mesmerizing live performance to new audiences across the globe. Recently the film also became available for purchase across streaming services worldwide.

Dates for ‘The Last Goodbye Finale Tour’ were announced back in February to put a closure to the group’s iconic, “The Last Goodbye Tour,” which launched in 2022 to critical acclaim in support of their critically acclaimed Grammy-nominated album of the same name. Becoming their biggest tour to date, “The Last Goodbye” tour sold over 1.5 million tickets across North America with 50+ dates including festival performances at Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Outside Lands, Austin City Limits, Electric Forest, and Governor’s Ball.

For anyone who could not experience the tour, ODESZA released their first live album, The Last Goodbye Tour Live on May 31 via Foreign Family Collective / Ninja Tune

Save Live Events Now coalition petitions US government

The Save Live Events Now coalition petitioned the US government to expand the Save Our Stages Act to include live event workers.

Live Nation, AEG Presents, and Oak View Group, the colossal forces behind live entertainment in the US,  have joined together to form the Save Live Events Now coalition to petition the US government for relief for live event workers and musicians who have been impacted by the shutdown of live events due to COVID-19 back in March.

According to the coalition, 90% of the 12 million industry workers employed by venues and businesses don’t qualify for support under the Save Our Stages and it’s estimated that 77% of live event workers have lost 100% of their income.

The coalition is calling for a number of measures including $600 a week in compensation; healthcare subsidies, including an expansion of COBRA to ensure that live events workers do not lose medical coverage; and changes to unemployment insurance to make life easier for live event workers

The bipartisan Save Our Stages Act, which was petitioned on Oct. 1 has now been stalled after President Trump announced that he would be walking away from any talks until after the Nov. 3 election.

“Live entertainment and in-person experiences play vital roles in stimulating our culture, communities, and local economies and venues are the centers that host and make that possible.”

“Many venues are publicly owned because our society has recognized the important role they play, and now we need to extend that same acknowledgment to the millions of workers who are just as critical to the future of events.”

    – Brad Mayne, CEO at International Association of Venue Managers

More than 20 companies have joined the coalition, including Music Artists Coalition (MAC), Feld Entertainment, Rhino, TAIT, Endeavor, Paradigm, SAG-AFTRA, Bandit Lites, Fullstop Management, Universal Music Group, and more.

  • Live Nation Plans to Reduce Artist Fees in 2021

Live Nation Plans to Reduce Artist Fees in 2021

On June 18, Live Nation, the world’s largest live-entertainment company, announced that it plans to make significant changes to its policies, including the possible implementation of reduced pay cuts to artists, for its 2021 tours and festivals.  According to a memo circulated to talent agencies, this poses the financial risk over to the artists and agencies instead of the promoter, since it suffered such a loss this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.  Last month AEG, the second largest such live entertainment company also issued a similar memo specifying its changes.

The first report of the news was by Rolling Stone and Billboard leaving much to speculation.  However, a close source stated that most aspects of touring contract are negotiable and memo was intended to be the first step in official renegotiation of contracts for any post-pandemic events, which will be substantially different from the past.

The company plans to decrease guarantees to artists to 20% from its 2020 levels.  Further, if any artist cancels a performance in breach of contract, it will pay the promoter double the artist fee. If an artist’s performance is canceled to “due to an event of force majuere, including a pandemic similar to COVID-19,” the promoter will not pay any of its fee.  Instead, the artist is responsible for obtaining any cancellation insurance for its performance.  Should the promoter be not permitted to use the full capacity of the venue, either because of orders of the venue or any governmental entity then the promoter may terminate the agreement, and the artist will refund any money previously paid.

“We are fully aware of the significance of these changes, and we did not make these changes without serious consideration. We appreciate you – and all artists – understanding the need for us to make these changes in order to allow the festival business to continue not only for the artists and the producers, but also for the fans.”
